One of my patients, I”ll call her “Cathie”, a heroic woman in her 50’s whom I’d been seeing for a while, told me the following story last week. Cathie’s daughter had been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer when the daughter was a year and a half old. She was almost two when she began chemotherapy. One day Cathie took her daughter for a picnic at the beach and Cathie noticed that the strong off-shore wind began blowing clumps of her daughter’s hair right off her head. When her daughter saw the look in her mother’s eyes, she became frightened and started to cry, but she didn’t want to leave ‘pinnick’. So Cathie watched almost all of her daughter’s hair blow off, as well as her eyebrows. As a tear came down each cheek, Cathie said to me “I was glad I could hold her and kiss away her tears- but I had no one to hold me“.

Cathie’s family had gone away long ago. Cathie and her brothers and sisters had been sexually molested for years by an alcoholic and mentally ill father. And Cathie’s husband left her shortly after the daughter’s birth. Her story touched me deeply and, as my own eyes filled, I wondered what it was that so moved me. I think it’s the same thing that so profoundly touches me with so many of my patients: the basic fragility of our existence, all of us.

In Naomi Shihab Nye’s great poem “Kindness”, she urges us to open our hearts “to the fact that everything we cherish will pass out of our lives”. The author, Roger Housden, says that when we come to know this truth “as a lived experience, we shall also know a deep love and kindness”, because everyone is on the same road. Someone else’s pain and suffering are also our own. And when we experience that shared pain, it joins us to humanity.

So, I think the reason my own eyes filled when I heard Cathie’s story was, really, that her pain was also mine- not that I had been through the same life circumstances, but that suffering is a noble truth familiar to all of us. Despite what Cathie had been through, both growing up and, then, as a young mother, she was able to be totally present for her daughter and for herself on the beach that day. And in my office, she had enough courage to allow herself to be “held” by her therapist. And me, I have the privelege to witness every day this inspiring will to live.

Inner guidance is direction you receive from Source, Spirit or whatever you may name it. You may call it intuition, a gut knowing, a felt sense, or a sudden awareness to do something you can’t rationally explain.  This happens every moment, every day of  your life in very ordinary and practical ways.  You may hear a song on the radio with the exact messages you have been praying for.  Someone calls you on the phone, and you were just thinking about them. Spirit may be showing up in a conversation, or in a dream. You may suddenly become aware and know that there is something larger than you, assisting and guiding you, and all of a sudden your choices and/or conflicts become clearer. You feel more at ease.

Connecting with Spirit gives you a sense that you are part of the whole, never alone. You can choose to be in relationship with Spirit and learn to trust your inner guidance more and more.  The challenge is in being able to let go of your rational mind, your perceived sense of security, your logic, and be receptive and open to Spirit. When you do, you become more available to trust your inner wisdom and guidance in all aspects of your being. Your life becomes multi dimensional and mysterious.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I had to be willing to let go of many fears and beliefs, and trust my inner guidance. I had many decisions to make about my medical care, surgeries and treatment, and post treatments.  I was given a lot of guidance throughout my cancer journey, that enabled me to create more peace for deeper  healing and well being. When I consciously opened to my connection with Spirit, I became more aware of  my inner guidance, and my life seemed to flow more easily, even whilst fighting cancer.

It is critical for your healing plan and for your life beyond cancer, to know that you are not alone and that you are connected with your inner guidance, in the co-creative process for peace and harmony. In order to deepen your connection, I suggest you begin every day and write a letter to your inner guidance.  Begin by stating your intention for a spiritual partnership in all areas of  your life….! This is a powerful relationship with Spirit, and you will begin to feel the energy build.

Begin by visualizing whatever you want,  and write it down daily. Don’t allow your rational mind to dictate what you should or shouldn’t ask for. Allow yourself to become playful and open. Feel the excitement as if you have already manifested what you want.  In this playful space you are connecting with Spirit. You will begin to notice changes around you. There is excitement and joy spilling into your life. Coincidences become more noticeable. You are opening more to your Inner Guidance every day. Don’t worry if some days you don’t feel the connection. This takes time and then, it becomes a normal part of your existence. You connect with your inner guidance and grace and gratitude begin to fill your Soul.

Have  you spent many hours reading and researching blogs, websites, and pages filled with claims on how to cure and prevent cancer? It takes a fine tooth and sensitive comb to sort through the jargon and find the gems that are hidden beneath the glossy covers and images.

There are many reputable businesses that offer products, which have been documented and well researched.  Many people with cancer find support and are greatly benefited by wonderful  healing programs that are facilitated by experienced professionals.  I honor and respect those who have turned their cancer experience into effective initiatives.  This personal power ignites a global fire needed to burn through the status quo and find a cure for cancer.

It seems, though, that many people are jumping on the cancer wagon, trying to capitalize on the cancer experience, by taking advantage for the sake of capitalism.  Researching the web, one can find a multitude of healing programs that declare cancer can be cured,  simply by changing your beliefs?  Or what about the proclamations that a nutritional supplement cures and prevents cancer?  How does this affect us?  Often, the ways in which  products and messages are promoted,   generate the idea that we are totally responsible for our cancer.  Sure,  having a positive attitude, living a life with less stress and eating healthy foods  is important in order for our immune system to function optimally. The diagnosis of cancer is frightening for most of us, and we are vulnerable. We look for  support and answers to guide us during and after the cancer journey.  The objection is directed at those who take  advantage of the vulnerability of others.

There is a difference between selling and serving.  The intention to serve others, is an intention borne out of honesty and purity,  deepening and expanding the healing experience for all.  The difference is in how we hold our intention and how that intention serves the greater good.  When we are in the selling mode, we become insensitive to what we are saying, in regards to how this might sound to someone who is struggling with cancer and living in fear.  We distance ourselves from the moral conflicts, and focus on the outer  excitement of building a business and making money. The objective is lost in the neediness to make a buck.  The commercialization of cancer,  from this perspective, is an assault on our Spirit,  at the expense of integrity and the shared value for social contribution.  We compromise not only ourselves, but those we claim to help.

IT was like a deep, red, river flowing into my arm. My body shook like a leaf under the blanket of snow. Who hears me?  Who sees me?  If I closed my eyes I could pretend that my body was somewhere else, far away from there.  I heard the whispers of Angels stroking my cheek, reminding me that the sky is blue.  Why me?  There were no answers.

Questions fell away like leaves that could no longer hold on. Ocean waves lifted me into the crest, protecting me from the weight of this vision. A quiet song played between the embedded ripples of the sand. There was a stillness entering my heart. I knew this place.

My spirit smiled. Here I am, letting go, and opening, into serenity.

A respite from my anguish gave me strength.

Grace and Gratitude danced over my shoulders, glistening in the light. I exhaled and the river stopped flowing.

A warm hug, an encouraging smile. This was healing.

]]> http://sonnyrose.com/archives/347/feed 0 http://sonnyrose.com/archives/325 http://sonnyrose.com/archives/325#comments Mon, 22 Mar 2010 12:40:05 +0000 sonnyrose http://sonnyrose.com/?p=325 It is hard enough for those of us who have been diagnosed with cancer to deal with the fear of it.  What about those whose lives haven’t been touched by cancer and don’t feel the need to get involved in any way?  I try not to take it personally.  Maybe we are afraid of the word ‘Cancer’ and all the associations.  Maybe, those of us, who have gone through the cancer journey  want to forget about it, and not have anything more to do with it.  But, do you know that having the fear of cancer can hurt us?  The fear of cancer shuts us down.  We become small, and limited.  We become isolated and dis-connected.  We miss an opportunity to give.

The act of giving is healing. When we allow ourselves to feel someone’s else’s pain and fear, and offer words of compassion, hope, and inspiration, we are generating an incredible energy that touches all of us deeply.  We open our hearts and make the impersonal, personal.  We don’t even realize how one word of kindness can have a profound and healing effect for someone else.

A humorous story can help, to lower the blood pressure of a cancer stricken man.  A quote of inspiration can tickle a child’s face and warm his/her belly.  An image of hope can  lessen someone’s bodily pain.   A word of peace  can give a woman the feeling of serenity, as she senses a calmness within her breast.  The collective voices of strangers  weave a colorful tapestry of  support that holds us in the Spirit of Oneness.  We can open our hearts and let go of our fear of cancer.

How can we touch the lives of others in simple ways?  Check in with yourself and see if you shut down when you hear the word cancer. Remind yourself that your fear is someone else’s fear too.  Remind yourself that when you give, you are letting go of your fear.  Open up to the possibility that you can help someone with the kindness and compassion that is part of our humanity. This is a wonderful opportunity to be part of the Whole.

Many people do experience post treatment issues related to chemotherapy, radiation, drugs, and surgery. Fatigue is a common side effect of chemotherapy and many people experience depression.  Knowing how to manage your thoughts and beliefs in regards to negative physical side effects, can be the difference between stressful living and peaceful acceptance that can influence healing.

Kathy Latour, writes about the devastating effects of cancer fatigue in an article in Cure Magazine .  The negative side effects from cancer treatment, can be so stressful, that it becomes very easy to believe our life will be difficult. We succumb to the limitations born out of our beliefs, and hinder healing beyond cancer.

We can learn to change our beliefs and feel better, even when experiencing negative side effects from treatment. We can learn to change our thinking, and activate feelings of well-being.

Ask yourself if your beliefs are hurting your post cancer recovery. Find ways to shift your perception and feel better. You have the power to engender deep awareness for fuller health.

Do you wish upon a star hoping that your cancer will never come back again? Do you hope that all is well? We all want the certainty that we can control our life and all the events. We want to feel the security that we will be healthy. Sometimes we don’t want to take the responsibility or make the effort, or we don’t know how. It is easier to wish. It is easier to hope. What would it be like if we took the responsibility to make the effort and be part of our healing?  What if we focused on one step at a time, and learned how to be empowered?

The Healing Beyond Cancer is a method, assisting you to tap into your own inner wisdom. When we understand that we are responsible for creating changes, then we are motivated to take action, one step at a time. The focus is not on curing cancer, but more on curing the toxic ways we think and feel. We take responsibility and learn how to shift into a higher vibration, which creates a more relaxed state of being. Then, we are our healing, beyond Cancer.

Yes, we can attract what we want in our life, but it takes effort, trust, and a proven method to help us shift our energy. Nothing happens just by wishing. When we shift our energy, we become clearer. Many more possibilities open up to us. Life become full and we are moving beyond our fears, beyond our limits of thought.

Most of the news is blasted daily through the media, telling us how bad everything is.  Lay offs, recession, bad business deals, bankruptcy, foreclosures,  we get the picture. How does that make you feel?  Do you buy into the fear?  It is hard not to. It’s hard not to imagine how bad  life can be, if we lose more of our savings. It can be absolutely frightening to think we may not be able to keep our home. It is easy to get swept into the current of doom and gloom.  We can even create our own personal doom, if we keep thinking the worst.  We can become so stressed, not only with our own fears, but also from all the collective negative energy.  Our body and spirit becomes depleted and depressed. We lose our energy.  We lose our motivation, and let go of our power.

Our logical mind agrees that things are bad, and we go into an inner recession. We become tight, with our energy, and our creativity. We think we better hunker down and brace ourself for the worst case scenario. We limit our expectations and settle for what is….

What if….you stood in your Power and saw things from a different perspective?

What if you saw this time as an opportunity to challenge yourself and stand in your Power?

We can connect to a larger Vision and become aware of the changes that need to happen on our planet and within our communities. We can take this time to align with what is important in regards to our values and beliefs. We can energize our own transformation during a time of financial crisis. We can manage our fears and stretch ourselves into our Greatness, and connect to the trust that all is well. We can begin to relax and breathe in a sense of peace. We can ride this wave, and stand in our Power.

We have an inner strength that keeps us focused on whatever we want to create and manifest, no matter what is happening with the outside world. The trick is to know how to manage your emotions and stand in your Power, so you can create your life of prosperity and joy!
