THE FEAR OF CANCER CAN HURT US

It is hard enough for those of us who have been diagnosed with cancer to deal with the fear of it.  What about those whose lives haven’t been touched by cancer and don’t feel the need to get involved in any way?  I try not to take it personally.  Maybe we are afraid of the word ‘Cancer’ and all the associations.  Maybe, those of us, who have gone through the cancer journey  want to forget about it, and not have anything more to do with it.  But, do you know that having the fear of cancer can hurt us?  The fear of cancer shuts us down.  We become small, and limited.  We become isolated and dis-connected.  We miss an opportunity to give.

The act of giving is healing. When we allow ourselves to feel someone’s else’s pain and fear, and offer words of compassion, hope, and inspiration, we are generating an incredible energy that touches all of us deeply.  We open our hearts and make the impersonal, personal.  We don’t even realize how one word of kindness can have a profound and healing effect for someone else.

A humorous story can help, to lower the blood pressure of a cancer stricken man.  A quote of inspiration can tickle a child’s face and warm his/her belly.  An image of hope can  lessen someone’s bodily pain.   A word of peace  can give a woman the feeling of serenity, as she senses a calmness within her breast.  The collective voices of strangers  weave a colorful tapestry of  support that holds us in the Spirit of Oneness.  We can open our hearts and let go of our fear of cancer.

How can we touch the lives of others in simple ways?  Check in with yourself and see if you shut down when you hear the word cancer. Remind yourself that your fear is someone else’s fear too.  Remind yourself that when you give, you are letting go of your fear.  Open up to the possibility that you can help someone with the kindness and compassion that is part of our humanity. This is a wonderful opportunity to be part of the Whole.

I invite you to become Fans for The Healing Beyond Cancer Program ’s Face Book Fan Page. You never know how your words of kindness can help.

Thank You From My Heart,

Sonny

Beautifully said, Sonny. The small acts of kindness and compassion from those around me gave me the comfort and strength I needed to heal. I am committed to doing the same for others even when those pesky fears come back. It’s sometimes difficult to remember, and therefor to share, especially during the scary times. For me that tends to be around the anniversary of my diagnosis (coming up) and during testing times. Thank you for reminding me that confronting my fears will allow me to help others.

Cancer & chronic illness, like so much in life, is “THE UNKNOWN”. It seems as though when I was younger, confronting the “UNKNOWN” was much easier….Why has it become more daunting and difficult to sift thru and deal with these complex emotions?
I strive to recognize the importance and necessity to balance being supportive, loving and compassionate to/with others in need, as I struggle with my own health & healing, making sure to take care of my mind/body/spirit (which can be very difficult and lonely at times). In the act of giving and being generous with oneself, there truly lies the nature and nurture of reciprocal healing: opening and illuminating the “UNKOWN”, unfolding to the realization that we are not alone in our pain and confusion.
Thank you for reminding me just how simple healing can be….as simple as taking a deep breath….

Your breath is mine too. Your laughter is my laughter too. We are in this big unknown together.
