It’s that time of the year again. It is the time we are reminded to give thanks. We think of family, and laughter and delicious food and the smells of cooking….We remember our childhood. Some of us may remember times of sadness or difficulties. Some of us don’t want to remember.
I remember, 7 years ago. It was my brother’s birthday and a few days after Thanksgiving, and I was being prepped for a mastectomy. I was scared! That Thanksgiving was a mixture of many feelings. My overall experience felt as if I were living someone else’s life.
The connection to my own life came from the gratitude I felt for my family and friends. Home cooked warm casseroles delivered to my door! Bouts of laughter shared with friends who could stand listening to my sick humor. Hugs from those who knew I was scared. Cards of good wishes delivered daily. This was good medicine. The power of positive thinking and lots of laughter!
Today I give thanks for my life. I give thanks for all those people who are trying to find cures for cancer. I am thankful for my family and friendships. Cancer didn’t happen to me. It gave me an opportunity to feel more deeply. It gave me the opportunity to go to the edge and evaluate what is truly important. Cancer reminds me to live fully and be in joy. For this, I am grateful.
